  1. How do I keep the charcoal tray clean?

  2. We recommend that you put tin foil inside the charcoal tray (turkey baco-foil is ideal for the larger model). This will make life much easier when cleaning it out the next day. It will also give your charcoal tray longevity.

  3. How can I get a more authentic smoky taste from my gas BarbeSkew?

  4. If you feel the flavouriser bars are not sufficient for giving you that smoky taste, then you can buy a smoke box. These can be found online or at any garden centre. It is a tin box with woodchips inside and can be used on both charcoal models and gas. Once the box heats up it releases a lovely aroma which flavours the meat. There are a wide selection of woodchip aromas.

  5. What is the purpose of the flavouriser bars for the gas model?

  6. These are used to protect the stainless steel burners and to ensure there is no flare up when the fat drops onto them. The fat will vapourise when it hits the flavouriser bar and then release a smoke. This smoke will enhance the flavour of the meat.

  7. What are the flavouriser bars made from?

  8. They are made of rolled sheet steel and coated in porcelain enamel which is the same coating for the lid. This is enamel paint infused with glass and is very robust at high temperatures.

  9. Can the gas flavouriser bars go into the dishwasher?

  10. The gas flavouriser bars are coated in porcelain enamel and are very robust. They can withstand high temperature heat from the dishwasher and also a brillo can be used too.

  11. Where do I store the gas cylinder bottle?

  12. There is a shelf under the gas barbeskew and you can snugly fit a 5.5 kilos bottle underneath. Anything bigger must be stored to the side. Please note that the compartment underneath is for storage purposes only. When using the barbeskew, always have the cylinder to the side.

  13. What is the best way to keep the bottom of the gas BarbeSkew clean?

  14. Although there is a fat tray underneath the base of the barbeskew, we recommend that you use a sheet of tin foil to cover the bottom of the base (underneath the burners), to make life easier when cleaning. However please ensure you change the foil once the fat has cooled. DO NOT reuse it for another barbeskew, as it could catch fire!

  15. What temperature does the gas BarbeSkew reach?

  16. The gas BarbeSkew is different from the traditional gas models on the market. It burns less heat than a regular BBQ because of the rotisserie element. If the heat was too hot then the food would burn. The temperature gauge should never reach anymore than 150 degrees centigrade or 290 Farenheit.

  17. Which gas is best for the BarbeSkew?

  18. The regulator is for Patio gas only. This is the green bottle. We do not recommend using any other gas or changing the regulator as we can not guarantee what will happen as you will be changing the factory settings.

    Patio gas is an infusion of propane (hot) and butane (cooler) and can be found at any D.I.Y. store or garden centre.

  19. Does the Large Charcoal model have a temperature gauge like the gas?

  20. Yes it does now. Our new model for the large charcoal has a temperature gauge in the lid, which will allow you to accurately check the cooking temperature.

  23. How do I know how long to keep the food on the BarbeSkew BBQ?

  24. You will find that because the food rotates you can keep it on for longer, but also the cooking times can be quicker due to the fact that the heat from the metal skewers helps cook from the inside out as well as the outside in. The following is a rough guide of timings and we always advise to use a food temperature probe to measure the inside temperature of the food to ensure it is cooked all the way through.   29. How do I clean the cage skewers?

  30. If you have the larger models (Charcoal & Gas), then all the accessories (apart from the cages), can NOW be placed in the dishwasher as all the handles are made of black resin and are dishwasher friendly. However the cages for the larger models are too long for the dishwasher, so use a 80cm gardening trough from any D.I.Y. store or garden centre. We find the best way to clean them is to soak the cage part of the skewer in hot soapy water and after about an hour, use a plastic washing up brush making a sweeping motion along the cages. The grime will just fall away. Please note that wire wool should not be used as it will damage the chrome plating, however a brillo pad is fine.
    All accessories for the BarbeSkew II will fit in the dishwasher – good news!!

  32. Yes, all wood on the BarbeSkew BBQ is from FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) sources.

  34. Yes you can use two sets of clamps, one for each chicken - a spare set of two can be bought through the accessories page.

  35. Can I cook a suckling pig on the large BarbeSkew’s?

  36. Whilst the BarbeSkew BBQ’s were not designed as a “Hog Roast”, it is possible to barbecue a small suckling pig. The Charcoal BarbeSkew would require the charcoal tray to be lowered to the lowest level and if using the lighter bags, you would need to replenish the charcoal during cooking (for longer cooking times, briquettes will stay hotter for much longer). Also, it may be necessary to cook for a longer period with the lid open. Similarly with the Gas BarbeSkew BBQ – however the flavouriser bars are quite high up and there is also a thermometer in the lid that sticks inwards about 1 inch inside the lid, but again it is possible if cooked over a longer period with the lid open.

  37. Are the short skewers dishwasher proof?

  38. No. This is due to the wooden handles. The kebab skewers are easy to clean anyway. All you need is hot soapy water and an abrasive washing up sponge. Please note you should never use wire wool as this is too abrasive and could damage the chrome plating.

  39. How do the cage skewers clamp shut?

  40. We have recently improved the closing mechanism on the cage skewers on the BarbeSkew – they used to use 2 small clips to keep the lid of the cage closed, however we have now moved over to using one large bulldog clip in the middle of the cage skewer. This new single clip and the stronger hinges have had excellent feedback to date. We have purchased some of these bulldog clips for people with the old style cage skewers and these will be available from May 2012.

  41. Wouldn’t a stainless steel lid be better?

  42. Stainless Steel looks attractive, but needs an inner lining lid protection as the stainless steel tarnishes under heat. So it’s a poor material to use on a barbecue, but it looks nice. So the answer here is it looks pretty but it’s not the best lid material. Whilst we’re on the subject of lids, always feel the weight of the lid to determine the quality. A big heavy lid denotes high quality whereas a flimsy wobbly lid won’t last very long. The clear reaction of people when they feel the weight of the BarbeSkew BBQ porcelain enamel lid is “Gosh that’s heavy!” – which denotes the high quality specification of the BarbeSkew BBQ.

  43. What is the lid coating?

  44. The lid coating is porcelain enamel which is baked on at 870 degrees centigrade and it is this enamel infused with glass finish that make it the toughest finish available for a barbecue lid and to leave it looking good even after multiple uses. Do not get mixed up between porcelain enamel and high temperature paint. Only the highest quality barbecues like Weber and BarbeSkew use porcelain enamel. Lower quality barbecues tend to use high temperature paint which will peel off within a year, and this will be reflected in their low price and shorter life-span.

  45. Is there a warranty?

  46. Yes there is a standard one year warranty which is increased free-of-charge to a ‘Bronze’ two year warranty when you register your details. Please note, this warranty does not cover faults which are the result of improper use of the BarbeSkew BBQ. These are not considered as manufacturing faults. There is an option to extend the warranty to a ‘Silver’ four year or ‘Gold’ six year no quibble warranty – the price for the large BarbeSkew’s Silver and Gold Warranty is £54.95 and £99.95 and the price for the BarbeSkew II Silver and Gold Warranty is £24.95 and £39.95.   47. How do I keep my Gas BarbeSkew clean?

  48. A useful tip is to line the base of the Gas BarbeSkew with silver foil tapered up at the edges. This will catch any fat and grease that drips to the bottom before it reaches the fat collection tray. Then on the day following the BarbeSkew, and once the fat has congealed on the silver foil, simply remove the old silver foil and replace with new clean silver foil. If you do use this method, be sure to change the silver foil each time, otherwise the grease and fat from the last session may catch alight.

  49. What is the Difference Between Gas Barbecues that have Lava Rocks and those that don’t?

  50. There are 2 types of Gas Barbecue.  The first type uses LAVA ROCKS, and the second type uses FLAVOURISERS.  With lava rocks, the fat from the food drips onto the rocks and often catches fire meaning you have to constantly move the food away from the flames to stop the food from burning.  With flavourisers, the fat drops onto the flavourisers which protect the burners ensuring there are no flare ups meaning the food is cooked more gently.  There is no difference in taste of the food from either method, other than the food from the lava rock barbecues is more burnt – which has led to the sad fact in the UK that people think that the barbecue flavour is a burnt flavour–which it most certainly is not!

    Many people use smoke boxes with their gas barbecues – as the box heats up then they emit flavoured smoke – again these work well with the Gas BarbeSkew BBQ due to the fact that the meat stays very moist due to the rotation (think about the rotisserie chickens from the supermarket and how moist and tender the meat is), and the moisture then absorbs the flavoured smoke.  We recommend the smoke boxes from Planet Barbecue http://www.planetbarbecue.co.uk/shopwoodchips.html
    In fact nowadays, most barbecue manufacturers have ceased producing lava rock gas barbecues as their use is viewed as being Philistine.  All the mainstream barbecue manufacturers only produce barbecues with flavourisers.  At BarbeSkew, we are committed to putting forward the view that barbecuing is not about burning the food but about producing moist tender food with the moisture absorbing the smoke which gives the food the “real” smokey barbecue flavour as opposed to the burnt flavour.

  51. How many burners are there on the Gas BarbeSkew BBQ?

  52. There are 3 burners on the Gas BarbeSkew BBQ delivering 7000 BTU X 3 = 21000 BTU (British Thermal Units). This is not as high as some of the traditional gas barbecue BTU’s, but our research has shown us that a smaller BTU is required for rotating BBQ skewers. Gone are the days of huge BTUs that frazzle the food to a burnt black cinder. The 3 burners heat up 3 porcelain enamel flavourisers which give the food its smokey BBQ flavour, while any excess fat drips down into the removable / cleanable fat tray.

  55. Can I have the BarbeSkew assembled for me?

  56. Yes but this is based on our availability during our busy season. The assembly charge is £100 for locations 100 miles from Brighton. There is a surcharge based on the transport cost for other areas of the UK. We do encourage you to build your own BarbeSkew BBQ – the instructions are very clear, but if due to disability or some other reason you would like us to build it, we will be very happy to do this for you.

  59. How is the BarbeSkew BBQ delivered to me, and what is the delivery charge?

  60. The BarbeSkew BBQ is delivered flat-packed by XDP, a home delivery specialist. You can choose the date for delivery, and then the delivery can take place any time between 8am and 6pm that day, Monday to Friday. If you wish to have a Saturday delivery then there will be an additional charge.

    If you wish to have it delivered to an alternative address then this is possible by either paying by cheque and arranging a delivery date once the cheque has cleared or by paying by direct bank transfer if you require a quicker delivery.

  61. How long do the batteries last?

  62. The batteries have been timed to last for 50 hours, using 2 x D type batteries. So each motor will run independently for 50 hours, which if a barbecue lasts for 2 hours, will run for 25 barbecues. However if you use a high quality battery like Duracell, we have found the batteries last much longer – between 80 to 100 hours.

  64. Yes you can with the two larger models (Charcoal & Gas), as they come with a half grill. However you can’t with the BarbeSkew II as it comes with a full sized grill. But you can purchase a half grill for it separately online. See accessories page.

  65. Is a traditional grill included with each and every BarbeSkew?

  66. Yes, a traditional Half grill with two wooden black resin handles which are dishwasher friendly is included with the Large Charcoal model and the Gas model. The BarbeSkew II comes with a full grill. However you can purchase additional half grills for each model. The half grill gives you more flexibility with grilling and using half the kebab skewers at the same time.

  67. Can we use both rotisseries (the motor on the side and the motor on the back) at the same time?

  68. No, the two BBQ cage skewers in their normal lowest position do not work at the same time as the nine kebab skewers as they clash, but one BBQ cage skewer can be used in the upper position of the side skewer rack at the same time as the nine kebab skewers. On the BarbeSkew II, there is no upper position on the side skewer rack, and so all three methods of cooking (small kebabs, BBQ cage skewers and traditional grill) can only be used independently.

  69. How do the BBQ skewers rotate?

  70. There are two sets of skewers. The front set comprise 9 shorter kebab skewers, and these skewers fit into the skewer rack at the rear of the BarbeSkew BBQ, which is driven by a battery motor at the centre rear. The 9 kebab BBQ skewers are made to rotate together by a series of cogs driven by the centre cog. There are 7 kebab skewers on the BarbeSkew II.
    The second set of 3 larger BBQ skewers consist of 1 long skewer with two food clamps (for chickens) and 2 BBQ cage skewers (for beef-burgers/steak/fish), and these fit into the BBQ skewer rack at the side of the BarbeSkew BBQ, which is driven by a second battery motor on the right hand side of the BarbeSkew BBQ. The BarbeSkew II is only supplied with 2 BBQ cage skewers – it is not deemed big enough to be able to bbq large whole chickens – the larger BarbeSkew’s are deemed more ideal for this. Two long skewers are available for the BarbeSkew II as an accessory but these are intended for items like Greek Souvlaki see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Souvlaki-plate.jpg or small joints of meat like pork, as opposed to a large chicken and not forgetting jacket potatoes which barbecue to perfection on the BarbeSkew II.

  71. Which is the most appropriate model for me – the top-of-the range Charcoal BarbeSkew or the smaller BarbeSkew II?

  72. The Charcoal BarbeSkew is our best selling barbecue as the majority of people require a barbecue for parties where they will be feeding family and friends. With the larger BarbeSkew, you can just use half of it to cook for your family, or use the full blown BarbeSkew to cook for up to 20 guests.
    The charcoal BarbeSkew II is ideal for couples or for people that just have a very small balcony or small patio. It is also ideal where it will just be used for a small family of up to four.

  73. Does the charcoal tray on the BarbeSkew II raise and lower?

  74. No. Because of the size limitations of the BarbeSkew II, the charcoal tray simply sits on the base of the body. However since everything rotates, the food does not burn. However the charcoal tray does lift out meaning it can be cleaned easily – we recommend that you line the charcoal tray with silver foil prior to lighting the charcoal as this makes it simple to clean the next day.

  75. How does the charcoal tray raise and lower on the Charcoal BarbeSkew?

  76. The charcoal tray raises and lowers through the handle on the right hand side of the Charcoal BarbeSkew BBQ. When the coals have just been lit and they are at their hottest, the charcoal tray can be lowered so that the heat intensity from the charcoal does not burn the food. Essentially, the tray mechanism allows you to control the heat intensity of the Charcoal BarbeSkew BBQ in the same way you would control the heat intensity on the Gas BarbeSkew BBQ by turning the gas control knobs.

  77. But isn’t charcoal hard to light?

  78. Not nowadays. Simply place two charcoal lighter bags (we recommend “Big K”) – or just one for the BarbeSkew II in the charcoal tray, light the bag, leave the lid open, and then come back in 15 minutes and it’s ready to use. To create flavoured smoke you can add wood-chips to the charcoal. We recommend Western Willies Woodchips from Planet Barbecue.   79. Should I choose charcoal or gas?

  80. Choose charcoal if you want the real barbecue experience, with better taste and real flames – 70% of the UK population prefer charcoal.
    Choose gas if you barbecue regularly and want the convenience of coming home and starting the barbecue within minutes. An increasing number of people are moving over to gas with their increasingly busy lifestyles.
    As mentioned above, smoke boxes are ideal if you wish for a more smokey flavour on your Gas BarbSkew.

  82. Because the food does not burn as on a traditional barbecue, the food tends to be left on the BarbeSkew BBQ longer meaning that the food is cooked thoroughly all the way through. Of course, you should still always check that the meat is cooked properly, before removing it from the BarbeSkew.

It is then this moisture that absorbs the smoke giving the food the best ever barbecue flavour in the world.

  86. Two of the common problems with traditional grill barbecues are food coming off the barbecue burnt and food coming off the barbecue pink and raw in the middle. Whilst all the traditional bbq experts will state this never happens to them, the BarbeSkew barbecue is fool-proof – you get perfect barbecue food every time – GUARANTEED – without needing a university degree in barbecuing!
